Interim Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

As interim EVPCFO at the University of Michigan, Bobby Hewlett is one of three executive vice presidents reporting directly to the university president. In this capacity, he is the president’s principal advisor on financial strategy and management. His responsibilities encompass oversight of the university’s investment office, finance and accounting, enterprise strategic risk management, staff ombuds, facilities and campus operations, campus sustainability, human resources, and shared services.

Hewlett was named interim EVPCFO in November 2025, building on 14 years of service at U-M. Before this appointment, he served as vice president for finance, leading the entire Finance organization for Business & Finance. In that role, he oversaw purchasing, procurement, accounting, payroll, external audited financial statements, internal controls, sponsored programs, real estate, tax management, treasury functions—including cash and debt management and insurance—financial planning and analysis, and enterprise strategic risk management.

Prior to his role as vice president for finance, Hewlett was controller for Michigan Medicine’s integrated financial operations, where he was responsible for the financial oversight of the UM Hospitals, Health Centers, and Medical Group, the UM Medical School, a shared administrative services division, Michigan Health Corporation, and UM Health Corporation—the legal entity enabling Michigan Medicine’s partnerships, including UMH-West and UMH-Sparrow. Hewlett has also served on the Michigan Dialysis Services board, the Chelsea Community Hospital board finance committee, and the governance committee for the pediatric joint venture with Trinity Health – Oakland.

Before joining U-M in 2011, Hewlett worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he assisted clients with financial statement filings with the SEC, debt issuances, domestic tax provision analyses, and business unit integrations.

Hewlett earned both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and his master’s degree in accounting, each awarded with high distinction from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at U-M. He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Michigan and completed the GE Healthcare / Health Management Academy Finance Fellowship.

    Erik Lundberg is responsible for directing the University’s $18 billion long term investment portfolio, which includes the 9th largest endowment of an institution of higher learning. Mr. Lundberg was named Public Endowment CIO of the Decade in 2015, and has been ranked repeatedly among the top 25 CIOs in the world by Chief Investment Officer Magazine. Leading a staff of twenty investment professionals, Mr. Lundberg develops and implements investment strategy for the university’s long term investment portfolio, evaluates current and prospective investment managers, and ensures successful communication and relations with the University and its Investment Advisory Committee. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Mr. Lundberg held positions with increasing responsibilities at a corporate investment office which was charged with overseeing $22 billion in pension and other plan assets. While there, he helped develop overall investment strategy, led the global asset allocation activities, and managed the U.S. and non-U.S. equity programs. He also has prior experience in investor relations and corporate finance. Mr. Lundberg is a CFA charterholder.

    Pam Gabel has led the university’s Shared Service Center (SSC) since its inception in 2014. The SSC processes human resource and finance transactions on behalf of units across the community, including all three campuses, the University of Michigan Health system, Athletics and some affiliates. SSC processing includes Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Accounting Customer Service and Reconciliation, Benefits Processing, Employment Processing, Expense Report Creation, and HR Data Management, as well as operating four different supporting contact centers. The SSC also supports operational improvement activities across the Ann Arbor campus. Prior to joining the university, Pam held leadership roles in four corporate shared service centers, spanning diverse industries including publishing, financial services, construction, and manufacturing. She has been involved in all phases of shared services from design and implementation to continuous improvement and on-going management. Pam earned a B.S. in Psychology from Penn State University and a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

    Kimberly Kiernan manages the University of Michigan’s extensive physical infrastructure, which includes 37 million square feet of space on the Ann Arbor campus. She is responsible for a wide range of sophisticated and complex academic, research, and clinical facilities, including environmental stewardship and adherence to regulatory standards. She provides leadership and strategic direction for an organization of approximately 1,700 employees across the following groups: Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, Custodial & Grounds Services; Environment, Health & Safety; Logistics, Transportation & Parking; Maintenance Services; Operational Support; and Utilities. As VPFO, she has a significant influence on campus land-use strategy, policy, and organizational effectiveness. Over the course of her career at the university, Kiernan has held roles in the Provost's Office, University Library, and School of Kinesiology. Since joining Facilities & Operations in 2007, she has held progressively responsible positions focused on aligning operations with university goals and optimizing service delivery. Kiernan earned a Master of Business Administration in accounting from Eastern Michigan University and received her undergraduate degree in English and communications from the University of Michigan.

    As the Associate Vice President for Human Resources, Rich Holcomb exercises comprehensive leadership across the University of Michigan's human resources operations, encompassing the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses and Michigan Medicine. He is responsible for guiding key central HR functions such as Academic Human Resources, Benefits Administration, Compensation and Classification, HR Communications, HR Strategy and Planning, HR Analytics, HR Records and Information Services, U-M Children’s Centers, Health & Well-Being Services, Occupational Health Services, Organizational Learning, Staff HR Services, Talent Acquisition, and Work-Life Programs. His leadership strategies focus on nurturing partnerships in the workplace and fostering diverse cultures. With a career spanning more than 25 years, Holcomb has experience in human resources from higher education, industry, and health care sectors. His tenure at University Human Resources and Michigan Medicine includes several leadership roles, including serving as interim chief human resources officer for Michigan Medicine. Holcomb holds a bachelor's degree in employment relations and a master's degree in labor relations and human resources from Michigan State University. He is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the American Research Universities Human Resource Institute, the Society of Higher Education Human Resources Executives, and the TIAA Advisory Council.

    Jacqueline Bowman, Ph.D., has dedicated her career to helping others find solutions and resolve conflicts. As a member of the International Ombuds Association (IOA), she embraces the mission of assisting staff in resolving issues and helping to create a positive workplace. Dr. Bowman holds a doctorate degree in educational psychology from U-M. Previously, she worked as a lead counselor and program specialist at the Center for the Education of Women (CEW+) from 2008-18. Before that, she established an ombuds office at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and worked as a corporate ombudsperson for a Fortune 500 company, providing confidential, informal dispute resolution services.

    Chris Culley leads priority enterprise planning and operations and provides high-level counsel to the EVPCFO on a variety of critical issues. One of the projects he is working closely on is Campus Plan 2050. Chris brings more than 25 years of experience working in higher education, helping to lead numerous major capital projects, campus and community developments, and programming initiatives. Prior to U-M, Chris served as Vice President for Enterprise Initiatives at Georgetown University and Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Senior Advisor to the President at The Ohio State University. Prior to his career in higher education, he was Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio. Chris earned his bachelor’s degree at The Ohio State University and earned his J.D. from the University of Dayton School of Law.

    Dr. Shana Weber is U-M’s first Associate Vice President for Campus Sustainability. Weber has cultivated organizational change via repeatable and scalable sustainability strategies in higher education for over 25 years, first as a faculty member and administrator at Santa Clara University in California and most recently as Princeton University's founding Director of Sustainability. Weber advances strategic actions across campus operational and academic systems toward realizing an ethos of sustainability in service to local and global communities. Her current research interests include ecoregional analysis, the application of behavioral science to sustainability decision-making, and collaborative applied sustainability research within and across academic institutions. Dr. Weber earned her BS in Zoology from the Ohio State University and MSES and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Science from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Bloomington.

    Drew Smith oversees the Finance organization for Business & Finance, leading procurement, accounting, payroll, the external audited financial statements, internal controls, sponsored programs, real estate, tax management, treasury functions (including cash and debt management and insurance), financial planning and analysis, and enterprise strategic risk management. Before becoming interim VPF in November 2025, Smith was the Treasurer and an Assistant Vice President for Finance at U-M. His primary areas of oversight were Treasury, Insurance & Claims Administration, and Enterprise/Institutional Financial Planning & Analysis, with primary responsibility over banking relationships, merchant services and depository programs, cash and investment management, debt management, capital planning, all insurance programs and claims activities, management of the university’s captive insurance company, and the Business & Finance budgetary planning, forecasting, and analysis functions. Prior to joining the University of Michigan, Smith served as City Treasurer and Deputy Chief Financial Officer for the City of Boston, supporting the Mayor and Chief Financial Officer in managing the city’s financial resources. Before this, he was Deputy Assistant Treasurer for Debt Management for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he helped oversee more than $14 billion in financing transactions. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance and Investment Management, from the University of Arkansas, and an MBA from the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
